In addition to genetic predisposition, learning processes from early childhood onwards shape who we are, how we structure our lives, and the patterns through which we experience health, relationships, and sexuality.
Neuroscientific findings show that the brain remains capable of learning and change throughout life. New neural connections can form not only in adulthood but also into old age. This makes it possible to expand sexual experience as well as to change body perception, postural patterns, muscular tension, and sensory disturbances.
In sex therapy based on the sexological approach Sexocorporel, as well as in psychological counselling, psychotherapy, and couples therapy, different learning processes are specifically encouraged. Learning is understood as a central pathway to health, well-being, and personal development, and is an essential part of the ZiSMed concept.
Conventional medicine is well-suited for treating many ailments. Therefore, at ZiSMed, we work according to the latest findings of scientific medicine. For certain, particularly complex or persistent illnesses, as well as in preventative care, we supplement this with selected complementary therapies.
These therapies consider the unity of body and mind and go beyond simply treating symptoms. In interdisciplinary case discussions, we work together to develop the best possible, individually tailored treatment plan for patients with complex medical conditions.
Function of the Pelvic Floor
The pelvic floor muscles perform essential supportive and stabilising functions in the body. They activate reflexively in various situations, such as coughing, laughing, physical exertion, sexual arousal, or emotional stress. As a result, they are largely governed by automatic patterns, which can, however, be influenced through learning processes. Accordingly, pelvic floor training is used in a targeted way, for example in cases of stress incontinence or postnatal recovery.
Chronic tension and possible effects
Less well known is that many people may develop persistent tension in the pelvic floor. This chronic tension can affect the function of adjacent organs as well as overall well-being. Possible associations have been described, including digestive issues, bladder dysfunction, and chronic pelvic pain.
Impact on sexual well-being
In women, this may also be associated with recurrent infections, sexual dysfunctions, or pain during intercourse. In men, symptoms may include discomfort in the genital area, erectile dysfunction, or premature ejaculation. Reduced blood flow in the pelvic region is also discussed as a possible contributing factor.
Interdisciplinary treatment at ZiSMed
Regulation of the pelvic floor muscles and training of body awareness play a central role. Treatment is provided in an interdisciplinary setting involving gynaecology, sexology, and psychotherapy, and is individually tailored to the patient’s needs.
